Celebrating Six Years of Solo Practice: The Journey
Reflecting on the past six years since I embarked on my journey as a solo construction attorney fills me with gratitude and a bit of disbelief. It feels like just yesterday when I took the leap into independence on July 1, 2010. With the support of friends, clients, and especially my family, my practice has flourished beyond my initial expectations.
Achievements and Milestones Over the Years
In this past year alone, I have been honored to maintain my position as a certified mediator recognized by the Virginia Supreme Court. It’s been a remarkable nine years running that I have been elected to Virginia Business’s Legal Elite in the Construction Law category while also expanding my mediation and construction advisory services. In parallel with these achievements, I have had the pleasure of participating in planning the Virginia State Bar’s annual seminar, an opportunity that provides immense learning and networking possibilities.
A Personal Testimony: Family and Work-Life Balance
On a more personal note, 2025 has brought its own share of family milestones. My oldest daughter embraced her first year at West Virginia University with enthusiasm, while my son’s college visits signal that my youngest child is preparing for high school. Balancing a law practice with family obligations can be overwhelming, but my children continue to inspire me each day. Time flies, and I cherish every moment spent with them.
The Value of Community: Recognizing Support
None of these accomplishments would have been possible without the unwavering support system I have in my life. I extend heartfelt thanks to my family, friends, and readers of my blog who have followed along this journey. Your support has enriched my solo practice experience tremendously. Each piece of encouragement has affirmed my decision to pursue solo practice, even when things seemed daunting.
What’s Next? The Road Ahead
As I look to the future, the ongoing evolution of construction law continues to excite me. The integration of technology in construction and project management is something I am keen to stay abreast of, especially in a time where innovation drives industry progress. The next few years may present new challenges, but I believe that with adaptation and growth, we can continue to thrive.
Inspirational Words for Aspiring Attorneys
To aspiring solo practitioners thinking about embarking on their own legal journeys, take it from someone who’s been in your shoes: while it may feel risky, pursuing your passion can lead to a rewarding career. As Christopher Earley wrote, “It was also one of the best decisions.” Embrace the journey, take calculated risks, and never underestimate the power of community and support.
